The Parliament has approved legislature designed to allow six months of paid maternity leave for judges.

The government bill to amend the Judges Act to make the change was sponsored by Kanditheem MP Abdulla Shaheem.

He submitted the bill last year.

The bill was passed with the unanimous vote of 57 parliamentarians on Monday afternoon.

The bill states that all judges have the right to maternity and paternity leave. It states that judges will receive six months of paid maternity leave and one month of paid paternity leave.

Maldives changed regulations to extend maternity leave to six months and paternity leave to one month for civil servants in March 2019. State-owned companies and many other organizations have also followed suit.
