North Maafannu MP Imthiyaz Fahumy (Inthi) has resigned from his post as the Spokesperson of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) – as he is contesting for the post of the party’s Chairperson.

In his resignation letter, Inthi stated that the work he carried out in the capacity of the Spokesperson of MDP, alongside its members and leadership, is the best experience he has attained in his political career.

“As I am contesting in the election for the post of MDP’s Chairperson, I am resigning from the post of MDP’s Spokesperson – a position I have been undertaking till today, since MDP administration was overthrown through a coup in 2012 – effective immediately,” the letter read.

Inthi assumed the post of MDP’s Spokesperson in the year 2012.

He is contesting for the post of MDP’s Chairperson – as the 5-year tenure of South Henveiru MP Hassan Latheef who had been filling the post, had recently ended. Latheef was elected for the post on February 10, 2017.

As per MDP’s charter, the opportunity to apply for the post of Chairperson and campaign should be granted for contestants 60 days ahead of the date of the election. The election is scheduled to take place on April 16.

Alongside Inthi, Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail is contesting for the post of MDP’s Spokesperson.
