A Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) ship purchased 155.57 tonnes of fish on Monday.
Felivaru’s Manager Mohamed Ibrahim told Sun that it marked the largest single-day purchase of fish by a MIFCO ship in the company’s history.
He said that the fish were purchased by ‘Jazeera 102’ - MIFCO’s latest acquisition during President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration, in GDh. Thinadhoo.
Mohamed Ibrahim said that though work on the ship remained unfinished, the boat was put to operation temporarily to accommodate a good spell of fishing in northern Maldives.
“The ship is not yet completely finished. It was put to operation to purchase fish temporarily. The cooking area and other arrangements on the ship are yet to be complete,” he said.
Mohamed Ibrahim said that the work would benefit fishermen. He said that it was just the beginning, and that the hope was to purchase all fish caught by fishermen at a fair price.
