Male’ City Council has commenced the renovation of mosques in Male’ area for the month of Ramadan.

Male’ City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu told Sun that when renovations are complete – CCTV will be installed inside and outside the mosque premise, which will be operational.

Mayor Muizzu said that whilst they oversee 42 mosques in Male’ – 32 mosques out of these 42 will be renovated.

However, he stressed that the government had not allocated an adequate budget to carry out the renovations – adding that it will be difficult to do a thorough renovation due to this. Nevertheless, Mayor Muizzu said that carrying out maintenance work of mosques no matter what obstructions faced is an aim of the Council.

“Government only issued MVR 1 million for the renovations of mosques. Did not manage to secure more funds after making requests Finance Ministry and other government authorities,” he added.

Speaking further, Mayor Muizzu said that the MVR 1 million issued by the government will only cover the renovations of one bid mosque. He detailed that as renovation works cost a lot, it is being funded by the Council’s income budget.

Mayor Muizzu said that although all renovations at Male’ mosques cannot be completed by Ramadan; all necessary renovations will be done. He also noted the remaining renovations will continue after Ramadan.
