Male’ City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu states the city council expects to begin physical work on a new fish market in Male’ City after demolishing the current one in the middle of this year.

In an interview to Sun, Muizzu noted that the project wasn’t budgeted, and said that the city council was therefore seeking funding for the project.

Muizzu said the city council was making revisions to the design of the new fish market.

The city council plans on demolishing the current fish market and turning it to a parking zone. The new fish market will be built on where the local market is located.

Muizzu said the city council wants to have all markets under one roof.

“We want to build a modern and iconic building that is representative of Maldives, to bring all markets under one roof. To have all local markets in one place and all services for fishermen available from one place. We want to build based on an all-inclusive design where all services such as ice and fuel are available,” he said.

Muizzu said the new fish market will also bring an end to complaints over hygienic standards of fish sold at the market.

“This will be a modern and safe place in terms of health standards. And it will offer opportunities to a lot of fishermen. It will create employment opportunities. It will be a safe place for people earning their income and customers. It will alleviate health concerns,” he said.
