MTCC contracted for land reclamation project at Magoodhoo

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been contracted for a land reclamation project at F Magoodhoo, an island where there is an increased demand for land.

The agreement pertaining to the project was signed at a special ceremony held at Housing Ministry today, by Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Zeeniya Ahmed and MTCC’s CEO, Managing Director Adam Azim.

Land will be reclaimed at Magoodhoo which currently measures in 22.1 hectares – to include land required for the development of an airport.

Magoodhoo Council President Abdulla Waheed said that a total of 47.8 hectares of land will be reclaimed under Magoodhoo land reclamation project. Whilst 17.8 hectares of land from this is allotted for the people – the remaining 30.8 hectares will be allotted for the development of an airport.

Speaking further, Waheed said that Magoodhoo is an island facing extreme difficulties due to the lack of land. In this regard, he added that there was no vacant space on the island to be used for developmental purposes as well.

“The lack of land is a prominent problem for us. The last time land plots were announced publicly – over 200 people applied for it. But, we were only able to issue 54 land plots. That was over 14 years ago,” he had said.

He also highlighted that the decision to develop an airport at the island has made Magoodhoo residents very happy. He added that the airport will ease difficulties faced by Faafu Atoll residents in traveling.

“Our atoll does not have an airport. The nearest are Kudahuvadhoo airport and Maamamigili airport. If the seas are rough, it is not easy for us to make a long trip,” he had said.

Magoodhoo land reclamation project is funded by the state budget, being MVR 206.9 million. The project will also see the implementation of shore protection at the island.
