Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom has been awarded MVR 2.4 million as allowances entitled to a former president, which was halted during the time incarcerated over a money laundering conviction.
Yameen requested Finance Ministry to grant him the allowances he had not received during his two years of incarceration – after the Supreme Court squashed his money laundering conviction on November 30.
The total sum of MVR 2.4 million is made up as follows; MVR 50,000 per month as financial allowance and MVR 50,000 per month as living expenses.
Finance Ministry’s Media Director Mohamed Shanoon has confirmed to Sun that the money has been deposited into Yameen’s account.
Shanoon also noted that in addition to the MVR 2.4 million – the allowances for the month of December, have also been deposited into his account.
Subsequent to the Supreme Court quashing Yameen’s money laundering conviction – MVR 4 million was allotted by the government from the contingency budget to issue the allowances entitled to him.
According to the law, the benefits former presidents are entitled by the state include security, a monthly allowance, and office administrative costs. The benefits and allowances entitled to Yameen were halted following his money laundering conviction.
When the Supreme Court quashed the conviction, Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) had resumed providing security to him.
