A new allowance has been introduced called ‘minimum wage allowance’, in preparation of providing minimum wage to civil servants next year.

The National Pay Commission and the Civil Service Commission, in a joint press conference at the Finance Ministry on Wednesday, shared changes to the pay of civil servants that will come with the implementation of the minimum wage.

The allowance is fixed based on the rank of civil servants. The maximum civil servants will receive as minimum wage allowance is MVR 1,917.

Speaking at the press conference, Civil Service Commission’s Director-General Abdulla Saeed said the commission will begin work on incrementing the pay of civil servants by adding the minimum wage allowance on Thursday.

He said the commission expects to be able to inform civil servants of their new pay through their respective places of employment before January 15.

Abdulla Saeed said the allowance depends on the current pay, and that there will be differences between civil servants of different ranks.

“It is possible that there will be differences between different civil servants. Given that the commission has declared the maximum civil servants will receive as allowance, they can check for themselves how much they will receive,” he said.

Civil Service Commission said that the minimum wage allowance will increment the pay of 11,828 civil servants. As such;

  • The pay of 5,928 civil servants will be incremented by MVR 1,500
  • The pay of 4,184 civil servants will be incremented by MVR 1,000-MVR 1,500
  • The pay of 1,288 civil servants will be incremented by MVR 500-MVR 1,000
  • The pay of 430 civil servants will be incremented by lower than MVR 500

Civil Service Commission said there will be no changes to other fixed allowances civil servants receive.
