MP Adam Shareef calls for Speaker Nasheed’s resignation

Opposition PNC’s deputy leader, Maduvvari MP Adam Shareef Umar has called on former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed to step down from his post as Parliament Speaker, and allow someone else to take his place. 

In a press conference by the opposition coalition at Velana International Airport on Wednesday morning, Adam Shareef said he does not believe Nasheed, who survived an attempt on his life in May, will return to Maldives. 

Nasheed, who is in the UK, recently requested the Parliament for a leave extension.

Adam Shareef said that the Parliament was currently at the deadlock, and alleged that the government itself is conspiring to prevent Nasheed from returning to Maldives. 

“Based on past investigations into such incidents, I don’t believe the who financed and planned this attack will be captured and detained in the coming two or three years. If that’s the case, then I have to say the Parliament is at a deadlock,” he said. 

Adam Shareef asked that Nasheed resign and allow someone else to serve as Speaker. 

Referring to comments by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in a recent press conference, Adam Shareef said that the President now controls supermajority at the Parliament, meaning two powers of the state currently lie with one person. 

He said it goes against principles of a multi-party system in a true democracy. 

Adam Shareef said that a parliamentarian from outside ruling MDP should be chosen Speaker. 

“In order to balance this, I believe the best option at present is to select a non-MDP member as Parliament Speaker,” he said. 

Adam Shareef said he believes it will help ensure the powers of the state are separated. 

He urged the people to raise their voice to solve the issue. 

The opposition coalition held the press conference to launch its tour of GDh. Atoll and Addu City as part of its ‘Maves PPM’ membership drive.
