Fuel barge carrying 100,00 liters of diesel runs aground off Noomara

A barge carrying a large quantity of fuel has run aground on a reef off Sh. Noomara.

Fuel Supplies Maldives (FSM)’s fuel barge ‘Mekunu’ was carrying fuel from Sh. Foakaidhoo to HDh. Neykurendhoo when it ran aground on the reef to the west of Noomara at approximately 06:59 am this Saturday.

There are five people on board the fuel barge.

A team from Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) Northern Area Coastguard Squadron is responding to the incident.

MNDF said the barge was carrying 100,000 liters of diesel and 15,000 liters of petrol.

There are no signs of a fuel leakage, said MNDF.

The owner of the fuel barge is seeking assistance from another vessel to refloat the barge.
