Fire breaks out on board fishing boat, 1 injured

A fire broke out on board a fishing boat in G. Dh. Atoll on Saturday, leaving a crew member injured.

According to Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), the fire broke out on board the boat ‘Kurimagu’, which had been fishing near the Madaveli buoy.

The incident was reported to MNDF at approximately 12:33 pm.

The fire was put out with the assistance of another fishing boat in the area.

A MNDF spokesperson said one of the crew members – a 53-year-old male – sustained burn injuries to his hands in the incident.

He was transferred to G. Dh. Thinadhoo with the assistance of the MNDF Southern Area Coastguard Squadron at approximately 01:16 pm.

He is being treated at the Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital in Thinadhoo.

The condition of the injured crew member is unclear at this point.
