Strong winds, rough seas expected as Cyclone Burevi intensifies

Maldives Meteorological Service has issued an advisory warning of strong winds and rough seas in Maldives starting Wednesday evening, as Cyclone Burevi over southwest Bay of Bengal gathers in strength.

Cyclone Burevi now lies approximately 200 kilometers to the east-southeast of Trincomalee in Sri Lanka. It is expected to move west-northwestwards and cross the Sri Lankan coast later this Wednesday.

Meanwhile, a low pressure system formed southeast of Maldives in the Indian Ocean has also intensified further.

Maldives Meteorological Service said it expects the combined effects of the two systems to result in further deterioration of the weather in Maldives over the next few days, resulting in strong winds and rough seas across the country.

Maldives will begin experiencing the effects of the two systems starting Wednesday evening, said Maldives Meteorological Service.

Maldives Meteorological Service has stated it will provide timely updates regarding the developments, and have advised all to follow weather forecasts and alerts.
