Health Protection Agency (HPA) has announced 17 positive cases of COVID-19 from Kandima Maldives resort.
This is the first time such a large number of positive cases were identified from a single resort since the Maldives reopened its borders on July 15.
HPA stated that high-risk individuals on the island were now being moved to isolation facilities while contact tracing was now underway. A team of medical personnel from the Dh. Atoll Hospital are now at the resort.
The resort is now under monitoring mechanisms. Tourists on the resort will be permitted to depart if they are not contacts of the positive cases and upon testing negative for the virus.
HPA commenced sample collection from the island after a positive case was identified from the resort last Friday. The positive case later passed away while receiving treatment at Dh. Atoll Hospital. The individual was tested positive for the virus after passing away.
Currently, there are active cases in 27 resorts of the Maldives, including 35 tourists and 81 staff.
As of last night, the Maldives has confirmed a total of 11,659 COVID-19 cases since the first case back in March.
38 coronavirus patients have died from complications.
