Afif’s son elected Vice President of Seychelles

Ahmed Afif, son of the late Abdulla Afif, the leader of United Suvadive Republic, a short-lived separatist state formed in southern Maldives in 1959, has been elected the Vice President of Seychelles.

The presidential elections held in Seychelles from Thursday to Saturday, was won by opposition leader Wavel Ramkalawan. He ran against incumbent President Danny Faure and won with 54.9 percent of votes.

Ahmed Afif ran as his running mate.

Prior to the election, Ahmed Afif told a Seychelles newspaper that he was committed to assisting the President-elect Wavel Ramkalawan bringing about necessary reforms and fulfilling the goals for the next five years.

The separatist state formed in the south was brought to an end in 1963, following which Abdulla Afeef left Maldives and relocated to Seychelles with his family. He passed away in 1993.

His son, Ahmed Afif was born in Seychelles in 1967 and fulfilled several senior state positions prior to being elected the Vice President, including as chairman of two state banks NouvoBanq Seychelles and Seychelles Savings Bank.

His elder brother Mohamed Afif, who was born in Maldives, has also served in several senior state positions in Seychelles, and is currently serving as the Secretary of State for Cabinet Affairs.

Mohamed Afif visited Maldives last year as a special envoy of Seychelles, during which he engaged in discussions with Maldivian officials on expanding cooperation between the Maldives and Seychelles on areas of mutual interest.
