Afeef’s son appointed Deputy Speaker of Seychelles’ Parliament

Son of Abdulla Afeef – President of the short-lived breakaway nation of United Suvadive Republic – has been appointed Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Seychelles.

Ahmed Afeef – the Secretary -General of the opposition party of Seychelles, Linyon Demokratik Seselwa – was appointed Deputy Speaker of National Assembly following the abrupt resignation of the Speaker, Patrick Pillay, in January.

The Deputy Speaker at the time, Nicholas Prea has been appointed Speaker, and Ahmed Afeef has been appointed Deputy Speaker.

United Suvadive Republic was a breakaway nation consisting of the southern-most atolls of Maldives; S. Atoll (Addu City), Gn. Atoll (Fuvahmulah City) and Huvadhu Atoll (G. Dh. Atoll and G. A. Atoll).

It declared its independence in 1959 and but was de-established in 1963.

Abdulla Afeef and his family fled to Seychelles with the help of the British the same year.
