Health Minister says COVID-19 cases in Maldives could die down in 2 months

Interim Health Minister Mohamed Aslam has estimated that it could take a month and a half for COVID-19 cases in the Maldives to reach a level of average consistency.

Minister Aslam was responding to a question by an MP at the Parliament today when he stated so.

The Minister said that the government had introduced easements to measures in July based on testing results which showed 40 positive cases per 1,000 cases on average. The Minister said that the current numbers on average stood at 140. 

“Barring another wave, it could take a month and a half for cases to reduce below the benchmarked average 40, at the current rate, in my opinion for cases to go down.” Said Minister Aslam.

The Maldives is now seeing a significant reduction of cases after experiencing a second wave due to the lockdown easements in July. However, this is still high enough for authorities to call for resilience in order to reach a point where more easements could be introduced.

The Maldives confirmed 65 cases yesterday while confirming 67 cases the day before. However, active cases have fallen from an average of 2,000 to 1,125.
