Parliament session extended to approve Mausoom’s appointment

The ongoing second parliament session of the year, which was scheduled to conclude this Monday, has been extended to allow for decision on the request for approval for new Tourism Minister Dr. Abdulla Mausoom.

Mausoom was reappointed as the new Tourism Minister on Sunday. It followed questions over the legitimacy of his original oath of office on August 6, as he had been serving as a managing director of a private company at the time.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih submitted a new request for approval for the appointment shortly after Mausoom retook his oath, and it was sent to the Government Oversight Committee for evaluation on Monday morning.

Regulations require parliament to deliberate over ministerial appointments for minimum three days before making a decision.

Regulations establish that the second parliament session will conclude at the end of August.

However, the session has now been extended to Monday, September 7, with the majority vote of 64 parliamentarians on Monday evening.

The parliament will now go into recess after the sitting on September 7, and convene for the third session on the first Monday or Wednesday of October.
