Border control system established in Maafaru airport

A border security system has been established at Maafaru International Airport in N. Maafaru.

Communications, Science and Technology Ministry announced on Wednesday that National Center for Information Technology (NCIT) employees competed installation of the border security system on August 19.

The ministry said that with the installation of the system at Maafaru International Airport, all international airports and seaports now have border control systems.

The ministry said the border control system installed at Maafaru International Airport is technologically advances, and will facilitate easier travel for tourists through the airport.

It will be a huge convenience given the current situation of the country, said the ministry.

The ministry provided assurance NCIT will provide all additional support needed in the implementation of the system.

Surrounded by high-end tourist resorts, Maafaru International Airport was developed with USD 60 million in funding from Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), and is designed to accommodate Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircrafts.

The airport prepared for the reopening of the border on July 15 by establishing an in-house PCR lab, funded by international resort chain Soneva Group, which operates a luxury tourist resort near Maafaru.

The airport also installed thermal cameras, glass partitions at service counters, and social distancing markers.

Maafaru International Airport’s runway is to be further enlarged to accommodate Boing 777 twinjet aircrafts. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) government has approved funding for the project.
