Young fisherman from Gadhdhoo dies at sea

A young fisherman from G. Dh. Gadhdhoo was found dead on Monday after diving into the water to catch bait.

The death of the fisherman, a young man of 21 years of age, has been confirmed to Sun by an official from Gadhdhoo Council.

The body of the deceased has been transported to Gadhdhoo on a speedboat, and taken to the island’s health center.

The exact cause of the death has yet to be established.

Fishermen from Gadhdhoo who spoke to Sun during a trip to the island earlier this year said decompression sickness and accidents were common among them. They said that the island had some 20 people who suffered from decompression sickness, and that six of the island’s residents had died in diving accidents over the past 20 years.

Most fishermen who dive to catch bait are not trained. Dive experts have suggested it may be one reason for the frequent cases of decompression sickness and diving accidents in Huvadhoo Atoll, and especially Gadhdhoo.
