Records reveal slight drop in average duration of stay by tourists

Records released by Tourism Ministry show the average duration of stay by tourists who visited Maldives in 2019 to be 6.3 days, a slight drop compared to 2018.

The average duration of stay in 2018 had been 6.4 days, but the figure had been 6.3 days in 2019 – marking a slight 0.1 percent drop.

While the average duration of stay shows a slight drop, the occupancy rate had been 0.2 percent higher than compared to 2018, when the occupancy rate had been recorded at 62.1 percent. The occupancy rate in 2019 was recorded at 62.3 percent.

The total number of tourist establishments in operation; resorts, hotels, guesthouses and safaris was 873 – which totaled 47,244 beds.

Bed rights rose by 12.8 percent compared to 2018.

A record 1.7 tourists visited Maldives in 2019 – a 14.7 percent jump compared to 2018.

The top source market region-wise had been the European market, which dominated 49 percent of the total source markets. It rivaled the Asia Pacific region, which claimed 41 percent of the total source markets. The third highest source market by region was the Americas which held 5 percent of the total source markets.

ARRIVALS BY REGION:

  • Europe: 833,904 arrivals
  • Asia Pacific: 705,117 arrivals
  • Americas: 84,793 arrivals
  • Middle East: 60,003 arrivals
  • Africa: 18, 698 arrivals

The top source market by country had been the Chinese market which held a 16.7 percent stake of total arrivals with 284,029 arrivals. It followed the Indian market which held a 9.7 percent stake of total arrivals with 166,030 arrivals.
