Foundation of new VIA terminal completed

Foundation works on the new terminal at Velana International Airport have been concluded.

Maldives Airports Company Limited stated that the first phase of works above ground for the terminal was completed. It also stated that 15 percent of the work on column reinforcement and Pile capping was also finished, in a tweet sent out today. 2000 meters of ground slabbing work was also complete, read the tweet.

The new terminal is being developed by the Bin Laden Group from Saudi Arabia.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has previously stated that the project would be receiving the most attention by the government next year. The project was halted a while ago before recommencing in July 2019. A design change was brought to the new terminal which is being constructed in a 78,000-meter space South-west of the current terminal.

The terminal is part of the massive project to develop the airport and is funded by Abu Dhabi Fund, Kuwait Fund, Saudi Fund and the OPEC Fund for Industrial Development. Around USD 680 million was received for the project from these funds.

Journalists have been invited to visit the site of the terminal tomorrow.
