Parliament approves Fathuhulla as Commissioner-General of Taxation

Former Director of Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has been approved as the Commissioner General of Taxation by the Parliament.

The Parliament approved Fathuhulla to the post and Asma Shafeeu as the Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation unanimously in votes taken in today’s session.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had nominated the former Assistant Commissioner of Customs Ismail Naashidh in addition to Fathuhullah Jameel for the post of Commissioner General of Taxation. Out of the two nominees, Fathuhullah was recommended for the post by the Parliament’s Committee on Economic Affairs on October 24.

The President had also nominated six names for the post of Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation.

They are:

  • Mohamed Siraj Muneeru – New Light, Dhandimagu, Gn Fuvahmulah.
  • Asma Shafeeu – Vaijeheyge, H.A Ihavandhoo
  • Ismail Saajid – M.A Vilaarodhi
  • Ahmed Shareef – Anbugasdhoshuge, N. Manadhoo
  • Ahmed Wafir – V. Elam
  • Hamdhee Ageel – H. Rangeli 4

Since Asma got the approval of all MPs no votes were carried out for the remaining names on the list in today’s session.

The posts of Commissioner General of Taxation and Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation were vacated due to an amendment to the Taxation laws of the country. The post of Commissioner General of Taxation was previously held by Yazeedh Mohamed while the post of Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation was held by Hassan Zareer.
