The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has stated that most of the cases it received were regarding elderly people who have not received the care they need.

A statement by the HRCM on the occasion of the International Day for Older Persons read that the Commission receives a large number of cases that involve elderly people who have neglected.

The highest number of cases involved elderly people who are neglected by family members and cases where the government provided financial assistance is misused by their guardians. HRCM called on the family members of the elderly people to not let such incidents happen and for the community to give the love and care that is needed by elderly people.

HRCM also called on people to not cast elderly people aside and allow them the equal opportunity to work as well as gain shelter and housing. The Commission also called to better equip the government institutions in charge of overseeing these things and provide the institutions with the necessary resources to implement their mandate and enhance their employees.
