Two nominated for membership at HRCM

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has nominated two candidates for membership at the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM), as replacements for two members who are set to exit the human rights watchdog in September.

The letter recommending the candidates were read at the Parliament on Tuesday morning. They are:

  • Mohamed Faris Thaha, H. Sosun, K. Male’
  • Mohamed Shafeeq Mahmood, M. Poppy, K. Male’

They were nominated to replace two commissioners whose term is set to expire on September 8; HRCM’s vice president Mumina Waheed and member Aminath Shifaath Abdul Razzaq.

Of the two nominated for the HRCM, Shafeeq previously served in high-ranking roles in the government and government-owned companies, including as CEO of Local Government Authority (LGA), managing director of Maldives Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), and CEO of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL).

Meanwhile, Faris has a Master of Law from Villa College, and previously served as the head of National Center for the Arts (NCA) and as an executive coordinator at the Sports Ministry.

The nominees are under review by the Parliament’s Human Rights and Gender Committee.
