Male' city's carnival area has been flooded due to tidal waves that occurred due to sea swell surges in the morning.
Police have cautioned citizens to be alert about the tidal waves. Tidal waves and sea swell surges are common throughout the Maldives during the high tide. The carnival area is the location of an ongoing night market when this incident occurred.
The Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has already stated that the upcoming Eid holidays starting on Sunday will be affected by unfavorable conditions. It has forecast that Central Maldives and the North of the country could be affected by heavy rains and thunderstorms, while the weather for the South of the country is also predicted to be bad as well with a few isolated thunderstorms.
The Met Office has also stated that some islands could be affected by tidal waves during days of bad weather and may experience winds of up to 7-16 knots coming from the South/southwest. Winds may gust around 26 knots during showers. The Met Office has stated that seas will be moderate and may become rough during showers with waves of up to 3 – 6 feet experienced at open sea.
