Suspect in abuse of 9-year-old from Huvadhoo to remain jailed pending outcome of trial

The suspect arrested for sexually abusing a nine-year-old girl from Huvadhoo Atoll has been remanded to jail pending the outcome of his trial.

The suspect, identified as a 71-year-old male, was arrested on May 20. His remand period was extended two times since his arrest.

A spokesperson from Maldives Police Service reported to ‘Sun’ this Thursday that the man has now been remanded to jail pending the outcome of his trial. He did not disclose any details.

The man arrested in the case is the longtime boyfriend of the victim’s mother. Maldives Police Service confirmed earlier that it is also investigating a report the victim was also sexually abused by her two brothers who are 13 and 16 years of age.

According to the Gender Ministry, the victim has been re-located to a safer environment.

The sexual abuse case was reported to Maldives Police Service.

Authorities have disclosed few details pertaining to the case as it involves minors.
