The expectation of having more female members in the 19th People’s Majlis was high.

The Parliamentary Election of 2019 was a golden opportunity for females to gain authoritative positions in the law-making body of Maldivian Government.

Even though 35 female candidates from the 87 constituencies competed in the Election held this Saturday, only four females won the seats of Parliament.

Four candidates from Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) secured their seats at the Parliament – Eva Abdulla for the North Galolhu constituency, Jeehan Mahmood for Lh. Hinnavaru Constituency, Rozaina Adam for Addu-Meedhoo constituency and Hisaan Hussain for B. Thulhaadhoo constituency.

Even though the number of seats in the Parliament increased, the number of female members in the Parliament decreased from 5 female members in the 18th People’s Majlis to 4 female members for the upcoming 19th People’s Majlis.

The most anticipated news after the results of Parliamentary election 2019 is handing the seat of Speaker of People’s Majlis to a female MP.

This would be a huge step in empowerment of women.
