Ex-President Yameen chooses not to vote in Parliamentary Elections

Former Maldivian President and Leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom did not vote in the parliamentary elections this Saturday, confirms PPM.

Yameen, who is the country’s opposition leader, belongs to the North Machangolhi constituency.

An official from PPM confirmed Yameen chose not to vote in the election, but did not specify why.

PPM has a candidate running for the North Machangolhi seat – Jameela Ali Khalid, former Maldivian Ambassador to Germany.

The seat is also being fought for by Yameen’s nephew – MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon.

Candidates competing for North Machangolhi constituency:

  • Jameela Ali Khalid (PPM-PNC)
  • Ahmed Faris Maumoon (Independent)
  • Mohamed Rasheed (Boadhigu) (MDP)
  • Adam Manik (Sarangu) (Independent)

Polling in the parliamentary elections began at 8 am and closed at 6 pm.
