Political parties, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) have not submitted names for the national advisory committee set up for the upcoming parliamentary elections, says President of Elections Commission (EC), Ahmed Shareef.

In a tweet this Sunday afternoon, Shareef said the advisory committee is made up of representatives of all registered political parties, but that neither PPM nor DRP have yet to name their nominations for the committee.

PPM is currently in the middle of a legal dispute over its ownership, and has eased its political activities as it focuses on establishing a new political party, People’s National Congress (PNC).

PNC and PPM has recently accused EC of discrimination, and deliberately delaying the registration process of PNC; an accusation which has been denied by EC.

“EC is not discriminating against PPM,” wrote Shareef in his tweet this Sunday.

The national advisory committee for the upcoming elections needs to have 21 members.

The first meeting of the committee is scheduled for Monday morning.
