The nine-year-old girl on whom a sack of cement fell from the fifth floor of a construction site this Sunday suffered expensive injuries to her legs and shoulders, says Male’ City Mayor.
Mayor Shifa Mohamed, who paid a visit to the girl’s family at the Indhira Gandhi Memorial this Sunday afternoon, spoke to ‘Sun’ and said the girl has dislocated her shoulder and sustained extensive injuries to her legs.
Shifa said the girl is having respiratory difficulties and is hemorrhaging internally.
She appealed to the public to donate blood to the girl.
Her blood type is B Positive.
The cement sack was being lifted from the fifth floor to the sixth floor of M. Nalahiya Manzil when the sack hit the side of the building and burst open – loosening the rope around it.
It fell on top of the head of the nine-year-old who was walking on the pavement below the construction site.
Mayor Shifa said the contractor, W Construction, has permit for the construction site, but that the area was not closed off as required by regulations when the work was being carried out.
She said the tragic accident took place with a meeting scheduled with construction companies to discuss the very same issue on Monday.
The nine-year-old girl is currently undergoing emergency surgery at the IGMH.
Video of the incident shows the girl walking on the pavement with an adult woman walking behind her, and a sack of cement falling on her head.
The girl appeared to be unconscious with her legs protruding at an odd angle.
The girl’s condition was first noticed by a construction worker nearby once the dust from the cement cleared. And another man was seen throwing the girl over his shoulders and rushing to get a vehicle to transport her to the hospital.
