Ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has made the decision to hold an extraordinary congress following its defeat at the presidential elections 2018.

PPM announced in a statement that the party will hold its congress at Male’ City on coming Friday and Saturday.

PPM last held a congress in 2013.

The party has made several changes to the positions of its members elected during the congress in 2013 following conflict within the party. The biggest change being the removal of PPM’s leader former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and his dismissal from the party. Following which incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom was charged with running the party.

The powers of the ruling party were handed over to Yameen via a Civil Court order in 2016. The court order also instructed the party to hold a congress under Yameen’s leadership, but no congress has been held to date.

The statement announcing the decision to hold a congress has been followed by warnings by those loyal to PPM’s electoral leader Maumoon that they will obstruct the congress.

Maumoon is currently incarcerated in prison.

President-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu) has vowed to restore PPM to its electoral leaders.
