First tarmac layer of the new runway in place at VIA
Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has said that the first of three layers of the tarmac of the new runway being developed at Velana International Airport (VIA) has been set in place.
General Manager of Corporate Communications at MACL, Hassan Areef said today that the first part of the 2000 ft of tarmac north of the runway has been completed and the work is underway for the other two layers.
He said that aside from the new runway, a taxi-way and shoulder will also being build in paralell to connect to the existing runway.
Being developed to facilitate the larges aircrafts the A380, the new runway is set to be 3400 meters long and 60 meters wide upon completion as part of the billion dollar project run by the government.
