The first baby conceived through IVF at Dharumavantha Hospital’s Fertility Center has been successfully delivered, marking a major milestone in reproductive healthcare in Maldives.

In a statement issued Wednesday evening, Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) confirmed the birth and credited the achievement to the collaborative efforts of doctors, nurses and fertility specialists at the center.

CEO of Male' Group of Hospitals (MCGH), Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem, described the birth as a historic moment and a source of hope for families seeking fertility treatment in Maldives.

“Families have had to spend many days abroad to access IVF services, causing financial and emotional strain,” Haleem said.

The birth follows the launch of a government‑backed initiative to expand IVF access. In mid‑November last year, Aasandha opened 50 slots for IVF treatment, with the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) providing support to eligible couples.

IVF services are now available at Treetop Hospital, IGMH, and Dharumavantha Hospital. Previously, many Maldivians with fertility challenges had to travel abroad for treatment, often at significant personal cost.

The expansion of IVF services was part of President Mohamed Muizzu’s campaign pledge to improve access to reproductive healthcare and reduce the burden on families.
