One million trees have been planted nationwide under the government’s flagship Five Million Trees Project, the Ministry of Tourism and Environment announced this week.

The initiative was launched on June 5, 2024, last year’s Environment Day, as part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s campaign pledge to plant five million trees across the Maldives.

Since then, tree planting activities have expanded to 55 islands across eight atolls, with support from government agencies and state-owned companies including the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) and STELCO.

To further accelerate the programme, the government has announced the construction of plant nurseries in L. Gan and Hulhumale' Phase II. A 55,000 square foot nursery in Hulhumale' is being established with grant support from the Government of China.

The ministry also confirmed that environmental awareness sessions have been conducted in Addu City as part of the broader conservation effort.

While the milestone of one million trees has been reached, the ministry has not yet disclosed a detailed breakdown of planting locations or species.
