A state-of-the-art solar-diesel-battery hybrid system installed in R. Innamaadhoo will save over 164,000 liters of diesel annually, according to the Environment Ministry.

In a post on X on Sunday, the Environment Ministry said the hybrid system comprises 350 kWp of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity and a 618 kWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).

According to the Environment Ministry, the system, once operational, will make a major impact on island’s energy mix by saving over 164,000 liters of diesel and cutting over 400 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

“Once operational, this system will make a major impact on island’s energy mix, saving 164,672 liters of diesel annually and cutting 403 tons of CO₂ emissions each year,” said the ministry.

The Environment Ministry said that this initiative supports President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s vision of meeting 33 percent of the Maldives’ electricity demand through renewable energy by 2028.

Hussain Areef, the Fenaka Corporation’s station manager for Innamaadhoo, told Sun that the installation work is now complete, and the company is now testing the system.

However, he was unable to say how long the testing phase will last.

Areef said the new system is expected to revolutionize energy use in Innamaadhoo.

The company expects to be able to shut off generators six hours a day, and save around 2,000 liters of diesel on a daily basis.
