Ooredoo sets up emergency charging station after fire knocks out power in Gan

Following the fire at the L. Gan power house that left the entire island without electricity on Wednesday afternoon, Ooredoo Maldives has set up an emergency charging station to assist affected residents.  

The fire broke out on Wednesday afternoon at the power house, which serves a population of around 5,000 people.  

To support the community, Ooredoo established a charging station behind MNU College, powered by the Mathimaradhoo Ooredoo tower’s backup generator. The station is open for residents to charge essential devices.  

“Please feel free to stop by and charge your essential devices,” Ooredoo said in a social media post.

Speaking to Sun, L. Gan Council President Ahmed Zaki said employees at the power plant reported the fire first broke out in the chimney at 14:45 hrs. Despite efforts to contain it from inside the powerhouse, the fire spread.  

Police said the fire was extinguished by 15:50 hrs, and confirmed that one of the generators was damaged beyond repair.  

Fenaka Corporation is currently working to restore electricity to the island.
