Starting next year, the government will provide an annual grant of MVR 25 million to support artists and those interested in learning art, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced on Monday evening.
Speaking at the ceremony marking the two-year anniversary of his administration, the President highlighted ongoing efforts to create opportunities for youth. He said that since November 17, 2023, a total of 375 young people have been trained under the government’s apprenticeship programme.
Of those, 72 percent have secured employment, while another 112 youth are currently undergoing training, he said.
The President noted that the government is also offering direct financial assistance to youth. He pointed to painting as a field where many young Maldivians are active, adding that he often visits exhibitions and is impressed by the talent on display.
“I promised to include in the budget for this next year, and then every year, a grant of MVR 25 million for those who are new to the art of drawing and those who want to go further in it. It will start very soon,” said President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
Exhibitions showcasing the work of local artists are held from time to time in the Maldives. However, some artists have expressed concern that the field does not generate enough income to sustain a livelihood.
