The bad weather conditions affecting the Maldives are expected to prevail through next week, according to the national weather agency.

The Maldives has been experiencing widespread rain, strong winds and rough seas since last week.

On early Thursday, Almaak Fiya, a 100-foot landing craft, was headed from Male’ City to the resort island of K. Eriyadhoo with a crew of seven people when it overturned. At least one person has been found dead while two remain missing.

An official from the Maldives Meteorological Service told Sun on Thursday morning that the severe or disruptive rain being experienced in the country will last through Saturday. But more rains and strong winds are expected until at least the end of next week.

“We are currently experiencing disruptive rain. The heavy rain will wind down after Saturday. But there’s going to be more rain next week,” said the official.

The weather agency forecasts strong winds and rough seas for next week.

According to the official who spoke to Sun, while the rain will slow down at the start of the week, it will begin raining heavily again by mid-to-end of next week.

The Meteorological Service forecasts scattered rain and thunderstorms across the country, with squally showers over isolated places.

The agency forecast west-north westerly winds at 15-25 miles per hour, with gusts of 45-50 miles per hour during showers.

Seas are expected to be rough, with waves of 4-7 feet.

The agency urges everyone, especially seafarers, to be cautious.
