Landing craft overturns, leaving one dead, two missing

A landing craft headed to K. Eriyadhoo with seven people onboard overturned on early Thursday, leaving at least one person dead and two missing.

Almaak Fiya, a 100-foot landing craft operated by construction company Almaak Maldives, was headed from Male’ City to the resort island of Eriyadhoo when it overturned sometime after midnight.

The Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) Coast Guard Second Squadron has rescued four people so far.

Coast Guard divers recovered the body of one of the missing persons from under water in the morning, and continue to search for the two who remain missing.

The identities of the people on board, including the person who died, remains unclear.

Meanwhile, the landing craft has now sunk into the sea.
