Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has welcomed the move by the UN General Assembly to adopt a resolution endorsing the New York Declaration, which seeks to recognize a Palestinian state and advance a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The resolution, formally titled the “Endorsement of the New York Declaration on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution,” passed with 142 votes in favor, including from the Maldives, 10 against and 12 abstentions on Friday, at the second plenary meeting of the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly.

In a post on X on Friday night, President Muizzu welcomed the adoption of the resolution, as he reiterated the Maldives’ support for the declaration and its call for collective action to advance peace and justice.

“Such declarations are vital to strengthen the international consensus and ensure accountability for the rights of the Palestinian people,” he said. “The Maldives remains steadfast in advocating for an independent and sovereign State of Palestine, based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.”

Introduced by France and Saudi Arabia, the declaration is the outcome document of the High-Level International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution, co-chaired by the governments of France and Saudi Arabia and held at the UN headquarters in New York in July.

The declaration conveys a strong commitment to a just and lasting resolution of the Palestinian conflict, with a clear vision for the establishment of an independent, sovereign, economically viable and democratic Palestinian state. It reinforces the principles of international law, including respect for territorial integrity, human rights, and the right to self-determination.
