Nexia Maldives, a private consultancy, has underscored the critical need for widespread public and stakeholder engagement in the 'Viluntheri Raajje 2045' (Resilient Maldives 2045) development plan.
The firm, which secured an MVR 17.9 million contract from the Finance Ministry for the 20-year national development plan, cautions that a lack of cooperation will undermine its effectiveness.
Hamid Sadiq, Project Leader for the National Development Formulation Plan and Managing Director at Nexia, noted positive early feedback for the plan, with many recognizing the importance of a long-term vision for national progress. However, he stressed that non-participation would weaken the initiative, emphasizing the importance of public consultation for national development. Sadiq also affirmed efforts to expand participation opportunities.
Mohamed Inaz, an environment specialist on the project and a director at Nexia, highlighted the crucial role of youth input. He believes their involvement will facilitate the creation of a future Maldives that aligns with their aspirations. Sadiq added that the plan would integrate modern methodologies and expert opinions across various fields, ensuring it reflects the public's desired achievements.
The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has declined to participate, citing uncertainty regarding the plan's implementation.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu first announced the 20-year national development plan on September 17 of the previous year, launching the public consultation process a month later on November 6. Upon its inauguration, the President stressed the plan's vital importance and called for participation from all political ideologies, islands, and age groups. He articulated an ambitious goal for the Maldives to achieve fully developed nation status by 2040 across all sectors, asserting its achievability through collective effort.
