Media Council requests to take action against those who attack journalists

Maldives Media Council (MMC) has requested the police to take action against those who attack journalists and urged political parties to stop these attacks.

This request comes at a time when journalists have recently been attacked during the series of protests by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

MMC said that a letter had been sent to the police to expedite taking action against those who attack journalists.

The council also said that it had sent circular note to political parties as part of the council’s efforts to prevent attacks on journalists. MMC said that such attacks have recently seen an increase, and urged political parties to cooperate with the council’s efforts to prevent them.

Attacks on journalists increase at times of political upheaval in the country. Journalists have been threatened and two VTV reporters have been attacked in the ongoing protests by MDP.
