Indian Ministry of External Affairs Joint Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla has met with Prosecutor General Ahmed Muizzu, regarding the issue of former President Mohamed Nasheed having taken refuge in the Indian High Commission in the Maldives.
PG Muizzu has confirmed to Sun Online that a meeting had been held at the PG Office with Shringla and Indian High Commissioner D M Mulay. Muizzu did not give any further details.
An official of the Indian High Commission told Sun today that Shringla has also met with PPM Parliamentary Group Leader and presidential candidate Abdullah Yameen, as well as Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim.
The official said that the purpose of the meetings with Nazim and Yameen was to ‘assess the situation’.
Meanwhile, MDP has been holding series of street protests calling on the authorities to withdraw the charges against Nasheed regarding the arrest and ‘enforced disappearance’ of Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdullah Mohamed during Nasheed’s presidency.
The government has said that the judicial sector is independent and that the government has not and will not influence the judicial sector.
Nasheed took refuge in the Indian High Commission about a week ago following efforts by the police to arrest him in order to implement a court order to produce in him court.
Nasheed has remained in the Indian Commission under the protection guaranteed by the Vienna Convention. He has however not officially been assured protection by India.
