Kolama Captain may have died of electric shock

The captain of the missing boat ‘Kolama’ of G.A.Kolamaafushi is believed to have died of electric shock at some time on Sunday evening.

According to a post by an individual on Facebook last night, Kolama had gone radio silent after crossing Laamu Atoll to Huvadhoo sea. As such, the person appealed to anyone with information regarding the boat to contact them.

Maldives Police Service, in a message to the media on Monday, said the boat was located at approximately 13:35 on Monday afternoon near Ekefara sea, south of G.A.Villingili. They added that the boat’s captain was immediately transported to Gaafu Alifu Atoll Hospital in Villingili for treatment.

Police said the man was pronounced dead when he was taken to hospital.

The deceased was identified as Adam Saeed, Dhonveli, Gaafu Alifu Kolaamafushi.

Gaafu Alifu Hospital's Manager, Ali Shameem, told Sun that a boat went to retrieve the Kolama boat's crew after it was located, adding the captain was already dead when brought aboard.

Shameem said it is likely Saeed died sometime last night.

Meanwhile, Kolamaafushi Council Vice-President Shahamath Hanee told Sun that the captain of the boat had an engine problem and went down to the engine room. The captain is believed to have died of electric shock, he said.

Haneef reported, "It was Saeed's personal boat, with five foreign crew members. The captain reportedly died of electric shock in the engine room after an issue arose; the details remain unclear."

He also said that work to bring the Kolamaa boat to Villingili was underway, in collaboration with the police.

No information has been received regarding the crew yet.
