Parliament has approved Mohamed Nasih’s reappointment as Civil Service Commission (CSC) President for a second term and appointed two new CSC members. Nasih was the first person the Muizzu administration targeted for dismissal from the CSC.
Health Minister Abdullah Nazim Ibrahim's spouse Dr Dheeba Moosa and former Supreme Court Secretary General Dr Hussain Faiz were also approved as members of the commission.
The parliament received 52 votes in favor of Nasih’s appointment for a second term as CSC chairman. Only four members voted against.
Dr Dheeba Moosa was approved by a unanimous vote of 60 members. Dr. Hussain Faiz was approved by 54 votes. No members voted against in both votes.
The terms of office of Nasih, Mohamed Farsath and Fathimath Shareef, who are currently on the CSC, expire on the 3rd of next month.
On August 17, the President sent six names, including the name of Nasih, to the Parliament.
The order of the names then sent by the President, including Nasih’s, is as follows:
Dr Hussain Faiz - Dhaftharu No. 1325
Dr Dheeba Moosa - M.Whitebell
Badhuriyya Moosa - Dhaftharu No. RS-414
Dr Fathimath Muna - Wadiage, G.A.Villingili
Aminath Ummu-Kulsum - Moonlighthouse, Maradhoo, Addu
Nasih, who currently serves as CSC’s president, attained his master's degree in engineering at the University of Liverpool in UK. He has over 28 years of experience in telecommunications and broadcasting, having served as Secretary General and Director General of the Maldives Broadcasting Commission, as well as Director General of the Communications Authority of Maldives.
Notably, a no-confidence motion was initiated against Nasih last November after accusing him of attempting to gain undue personal benefits. While the Independent Institution Committee voted to dismiss him, he was saved by a floor vote.
Interestingly, the administration of President Muizzu attempted to dismiss Mohamed Nasih from his position as CSC President shortly after taking office, making him the first high-profile target in such efforts against independent commissions.
