Maldives elected Vice-President of UN Human Rights Council

The Maldives has been elected Vice-President of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the remainder of 2025.

In this capacity, the Maldives will continue to fulfill the responsibilities of the Asia-Pacific Group as Vice-President.

Commenting on this development, the President stated that the Maldives "has a proven track record in advocating for human rights related issues."

Describing this as a "milestone" for the nation, the President affirmed that the Maldives would further strengthen its efforts to uphold the principles of justice, equality, and human dignity, consistent with its strong commitments as an active UNHRC member.

The President concluded his X post by emphasizing, "The Maldives is consistently striving to work towards a more just and inclusive world for all."

The Maldives has a history of serving in important UN positions. It has also been elected as the Vice-President of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), set to begin in September. Previously, former Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid presided over the 76th UN General Assembly.

The Maldives became a member nation of the United Nations on September 21, 1965, 25 days after signing its independence.
