The most important national duty of this country is to feed the people and make it debt-free, former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb said on Sunday.

Adeeb was sentenced to 20 years in jail in connection with the MMPRC scam, the largest case of corruption in the nation's history. He was fined MVR 2 million. One million of which he has already paid. Later, Adeeb even confessed to it.

Adeeb's counsel had previously stated that paying the lump sum in one go would be difficult. The prosecution has also filed a case in the Civil Court against Adeeb for failing to pay the MVR 1 million fine.

Meanwhile, on the occasion of National Day, Adeeb wrote in a post on X that the most important duty of this country is to feed the people, get rid of debt, provide housing and live a peaceful life. Every citizen should have his own e-wallet and a share in the country's economy, he said.

He was also indirectly very critical of Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom, former President Mohamed Nasheed and the interim Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

The MMPRC scandal occurred during the tenure of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. After assuming office, former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih placed former MMPRC Managing Director Abdulla Ziyath and Adeeb under house arrest, committing to investigate the matter. Subsequently, Solih granted pardons to both individuals, which is why Adeeb now resides abroad.

The Prosecutor General’s Office has since annulled immunity agreements for several suspects, including Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor, Ahmed Ishfah Ali, Mohamed Allam Latheef, and Mohamed Hussain. This action follows the 2022 termination of an immunity agreement with former MMPRC Managing Director Abdulla Ziyath.
