Gasim strongly criticizes President Nasheed

The person that former president Nasheed fears the most is the presidential candidate for Jumhoory Party (JP) Gasim Ibrahim, says Gasim.

Speaking at a meeting held last night as part of a weekly series of meetings held in the party campaign post M. Kunooz, Gasim said that he is aware that former president Nasheed wanted to arrest him after the en masse resignation of his cabinet, and that the purpose of the cabinet resignation was to facilitate his arrest.

“I am the person that G. Canaryge Mohamed Nasheed fears the most, and who he is most hesitant of, is me. I know that. I think that he fears me the most. The reason he dissolved his cabinet and started acting like a man is because he fears me. After shocking the world, after dazzling the Maldivian people, he went after a big thing and arrested me, what had I done? What bribe did I take? He staged the whole film just to arrest me. To jail me for the rest of my life. This is the person I helped and took all the risks for, the person that I worked with side by side to bring him to power. Old people say that all that a man would get in return for a favour is a barrel of oil,” said Gasim.

Gasim said that during Nasheed’s presidency, he had to try to punish people who had not committed a crime and that what Nasheed is doing now is trying to hide after his crimes, but added that Nasheed will not succeed.

“President Nasheed has committed crimes himself and is now trying to hide from them. He will not succeed. The Maldivian Constitution will not bend to his will. No matter how many people get angry, he cannot achieve it if he puts forward selfish reasons. Nobody is above the constitution. He cannot just stay hidden like that. He will be presented before the law. He will not have any choice. This is how things have happened in democratic countries around the world,” Gasim said.

The Jumoory Party Leader said that everybody is equal before the law and that the long arm of the law will reach out. He said that progress will be achieved after justice is properly implemented and that the contrary will cause the country to crumble. He said that Maldivian people do not want to be plunged into destruction for the sake of a single man and that the Maldivian people need think deeply and consider this fact. He said that the country cannot be plunged into chaos for the sake of one single man and that not even the parliament has such powers.

Gasim said God awarded everyone five sense, and that everybody is granted the right to individual freedoms, freedoms granted to the community, freedom of families and national freedoms by the holy Quran.

“Then why, while all this is so, while being Muslims ourselves, should we walk behind this man asking that his sentence be delayed? Who are the criminals? What are they, apart from criminals? When asked to come before the law, if they refuse to answer as commanded by the words of God, who are they? I am telling you that they are criminals. If Nasheed is brave enough, go to the trial and prove himself innocent. We did it the same way. You don’t have to go inside somewhere, or hide in a cave. What we used to say is, since you have become a crazy ignorant woman who owns no lands, what is this presidency you are still looking for? Then why don’t you say “amayyaai” and just stay in your house,” said Gasim.

Gasim said that his words are not intended to demean anyone but said that Nasheed’s continued stay inside the Indian High Commission infers that he has committed a crime and that the purpose of his actions is to evade justice.
