Protests against the government continue

People took to the streets again last night to raise their voices against the government and against the arrest of Criminal Court Chief Judge Abdulla Mohamed. The protest started at 8.30pm and came to a peaceful end at around 1.30am.

Large groups of demonstrators gathered at MMA area, several of them holding signs calling for the release of Judge Abdulla. Heavy criticism was aimed at the government in the speeches made by several leading figures of different political parties. DRP Leader Ahmed Thasmeen Ali said that the government “will have to eat sand”, and that it is incapable of doing anything beneficial in the future.

MDP held a gathering at their main hall in parallel to last night’s protest, where Parliament Member Gaddhoo Zahir requested the President to submit a letter of no-confidence to the Parliament regarding Chief Justice Al-Ustaz Ahmed Faiz Hussein. In addition, MP Shifaz called Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik to resign from his post, if he is ashamed to act as Vice President of President Nasheed’s regime.

Last night was the eighth consecutive night of protests, in the series of demonstrations against the government which started with the arrest of several political figures and Judge Abdulla. Last night’s protest ended peacefully, with the announcement to recommence demonstrations tonight at 8.30pm.
