Baarah MP Mohamed Shifaz has called for the resignation of Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik, saying that if Dr Waheed hesitates to be part of the MDP government, it would be best if he resigns from his post.
Speaking at a meeting held at the MDP main hall under the series “You cannot say that”, Shifaz said that there is no point in the Vice President holding his position if he is ashamed to remain as the Vice President of President Nasheed’s government.
“If holding the post of Vice President of the country is causing you worry and shame, I respectfully request you to submit your resignation as soon as possible,” Shifaz said.
The call for the resignation of the Vice President by an MDP Parliament Member comes following the Vice President’s advice to release Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdulla Mohamed as per the order issued by Supreme Court.
In his personal blog, the Vice President has stated that the case regarding Judge Abdulla is important not because he is a Judge or an individual who represents the Criminal Court, but because he is a Maldivian citizen.
“The most important and most precious dividend from the democracy struggle in Maldives has been freedom from fear. It is the knowledge that no one of us will be dragged out of our beds in the middle of the night and taken to an undisclosed location. The moment we deny this freedom from one person, we deny that freedom for all,” the Vice President has written in his blog.
Shifaz said that MDP members are not worried about the statements made by him as he is not a member of MDP.
“Our Vice President is someone we brought from far and outside. We all know and believe that he is not a member of MDP. So we do not have to worry about the things he says,” he said.
Shifaz further said last night that several members within MDP talk against the party’s work and efforts, and that these talks “will not affect the work carried out by MDP at all”.
